Have worn my Tilley hat for almost a year in all kinds of weather. I walk about 5 miles each day, and my hat has kept me dry, kept the sun off my head, and is very comfortble. Has been washed several times, and always comes out looking like new. May be a bit pricey, but well worth the $$$.

I have one Tilly hat but the sides do not button up. This particular Tilly hat is one like my husband bought out at the air show in Oshkosh, WI years ago. He uses it all summer, especially when he is out sailing. I borrowed it one day recently when we were on a vacation and liked the way it buttoned up on the sides so I ordered one for myself, different color. I also like the way you can order the hat by size. Hats that come only one size are always too big for my head. If you don't want it secure under your chin, you can put the tie in the crown of the hat.

Tilley hats need no further hyping. They are iconic, and live up to their reputation for uncompromised quality -something most unusual in this age of Walmart-inspired cheap, poorly-made products. I am now on my second Tilley, having demoted my original (now about 20-years old) to be my gardening and hiking hat, and using the new LTM Airflow as my "good" hat. If you have never owned a Tilley, you will be surprised, when you begin wearing it, to find out that Tilley-wearers constitute a sort of unofficial club. Perfect strangers will come up to you in airports and supermarkets (not to mention on the Appalachian Trail and in other natural areas) to compliment you on your hat, show you their own Tilley, and compare Tilley stories. (I'm quite serious about this -I live in a mountain resort area, and this happens almost on a daily basis!) I recommend Tilley hats without reservation.

BTW: Be sure to follow Tilley's advice to wash the hats often. It keeps them looking fresh and the washing does not seem to age them.

Honest reviews on Tilley Endurables LTM3 Airflo Hat

The Pros: It floats, wide brim for sun, light color

The Cons: Stink, "wears warm"

These hats are nice and seem durable. I cannot however get the thing clean. I have washed it many times and it always stinks within a day of use. I have been wearing boonie style hats for 15+ years and never once had a scent problem. Tilley's customer service admitted to me that this particular model tends to hold the stench. It is made of polyester and nylon. I requested an exchange for a cotton model which they claim does not. Tilley sent me a "recipe" for washing it posted below. It seems to work for a couple of days but no longer. I cannot wash it every other day that's just not practical. I'm not happy with the product and I will certainly not spend another $80 on a hat that I cannot wear.

From Tilly Customer Service:

"

2 quarts of warm water

2 tablespoons of ammonia

1 teaspoon of dish washing soap

White vinegar can be used instead of the ammonia.

Soak the Tilley in this mixture, scrubbing the stained area with a soft brush. Let soak ½ hour, rinse well and wash as usual. This seems to do the trick in most cases.

Our cotton hats tend not to retain odor if washed regularly."

This is an excerpt from the Tilly website. I do not feel as though they are standing behind this in my case.

Here in Michigan hats are used as an umbrella of sorts. Keeps the sun off, keeps the rain off, keeps your hands free. In the winter they are a must. My original Tilley is a great shape for kayaking or riding the pontoon. The thing is, on the sunniest days it gets pretty warm. It does a nice job of keeping the rain off, though. The baseball type caps are easy to come by but don't keep the sun off the ears and neck and just protect bald spot from rain. I saw the Tilley LTM3 Airflo hat and thought, if it does what it's supposed to it's my hat.

I've had it almost 4 months. Paddled with in in Northern Michigan. Wore it at a football game in the rain. Took it to Mexico on vacation. Now I'm not planning on this being my favorite ice fishing hat, but it has performed excellently in all other applications. I did feel a rain drop once which probably came through the ventilation, but considering the downpour I was in it was insignificant. I didn't feel like I was perspiring any more with the hat than I would have without.

The only thing I would caution one about is keeping an eye on it. When in Mexico in the past the peddlers in the market would call to my wife, "hey lady, come look at my stuff" and other such promotions. This trip it was "hey lady, come look at . . . hey mister, how much for the Tilley?" I got the feeling it would disappear quickly if I left it unattended for a moment.
