I ran two recent 5Ks in my wool blend cap (in the Northeastern cold part of the country) and two in my Pearl Izumi Thermal Run Hat. The Izumi is much more comfortable. It keeps my head warm including my ears without feeling heavy or sweaty and gives me more visibility on the road.Best Deals for Pearl Izumi Thermal Run Hat
This was my first thermal run hat and I love it! It fits great, protects my ears, keeps the sweat out of my eyes and is light enough it doesn't give me a headache.Honest reviews on Pearl Izumi Thermal Run Hat
I bought this when I went to Michigan as I wanted to continue my run training. I'm not a fan of wearing hats, but this one came highly recommended from another runner. I'm glad I purchase it, as it kept my warm (including the ears) and without the bulk or discomfort of a wool hat/beanie. Pearl Izumi makes great products, as I have bike and tri gear from them...I would recommend this hat.Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Pearl Izumi Thermal Run Hat
I used to run in a fleece hat with ear flaps I had bought on our honeymoon a decade ago from a sports shop in Fort William, Scotland. Not exactly the kind of thing one pictures for a running cap, but it generally kept me warm though it had an unfortunate habit of getting damp with sweat. I finally have a *real* running hat, and I am never, ever going back. This hat is even better than I imagined! My head (though, as any winter runner knows, my face itself is a whole different story) has not felt even a little chilly during windy runs with temperatures in the low single digits, Fahrenheit. But! It also does not overheat my head on runs with temperatures in the 40s. The hat is surprisingly light, especially for the quality of warmth it provides. It is slightly smaller than my head circumference, but stretches nicely without feeling tight to leave a comfortably snug fit. Another really nice feature is how deep the hat is, sitting low enough to cover up to my eyebrows, down low on my neck, and fully over my ears. After a month of running in the hat without washing it still does not have any noticeable odor; the advertised 'anti-odor' fabric really does work.
The only small nitpick I have is that my head occasionally itches during my run, most likely from the way it compresses my hair to my head. I couple of scratches and everything is fixed, but I know I can be a little neurotic about the fits and feels of every piece of my running equipment, so it is worth mentioning. Oh, and I guess I wish the reflectors were a little larger. I have reflective material on pretty much every piece of clothing I run in, but you can never be too careful!
The bottom line is that this hat fits well, keeps you warm even when it is very cold out, and you'll hardly notice you are wearing it! Definitely buy one if you run in cold weather.
