Not as advertised. It may work in a light drizzle, but not in real rain. Your head will be soaked, as was mine.Tuesday, March 11, 2014
Review of Outdoor Research Drifter Rain Hat
I have been using a waterproof, wind-resistant baseball cap from a well-known, national, outdoor store. It has been on my head for heavy rains while walking in France and Germany, on local neighborhood walks, and everyday use to the grocery store and local errands. My main complain was that I sweated in it, and it would get all wet inside if I exercised hard. It was a sweat bag. Call me prejudice, but I don't have that problem with Gore-Tex products. Gore-Tex breathes better. So, when the waterproof tape started to fall off my old hat, I started to look around for a new one with Gore-Tex this time. I found what I was looking for on Amazon and got it, and I couldn't be more pleased. The bill of the cap is quite firm and well shaped, without digging into my forehead. The adjustable drawstring is very handy to adjust the size of the cap for different uses. For example, sometimes in cold weather I wear a skullcap underneath the ball cap, so I must adjust the size of the cap to allow for this. The crown of the cap has a little more room, allowing for some breathing room for me, but that may just be the fact that I have an unusually small head for an adult male. This hat is exceptionally well-built, with good materials, and, although I have just started using it on a regular basis, I look forward to getting many years of good use out of it. One more thing; it is awfully nice to use a ball cap with a strong bill when pulling a hood from a good walking coat up over my head. The bill holds the hood to each side of my face, allowing me to look from side to side without the hood covering my eyes as I turn my head. The bill pushed the hood aside as I turn my head, and having a strong bill allows for that. This is just the hat I have been looking for, and I'm happy to have found it. Good job Outdoor Research!
