I bought this hat because it looked like it had better ear coverage than the fleece-lined wool hat I already own. Turns out, even though the brim comes down lower around the ears, the hat also has a lower internal volume so you can't pull it down as far. The ear coverage and eyebrow clearance are both essentially the same as my old hat. This is basically a good product, it's very warm and comfortable but also hard to hear in it, not just because of the insulation but because the fabric makes loud swishy noises when you move even slightly. The main advantage this has over fleece-lined wool is that it's much thinner. If that's a priority for you, this hat may be what you need, but I'm returning it and sticking with wool.Best Deals for Outdoor Research Alpine Hat
i like this hat, gave it 4 out of 5 stars only because medium was too big, and small is a little snug on me. covers my ears, and i like the color. i can still feel wind coming through when really strong gusts fly by, but only then(probably because small is a lil stretched out on me) everything else i dont even notice. great hat!Honest reviews on Outdoor Research Alpine Hat
OR ALPINE HATI live and work in Montana and I'm frequently subjected to cold weather during my work duties. I was pretty disappointed when this hat arrived as other reviews raved about how warm this garment was. However, I was skeptical because the hat is only made out of 1/8 thick micro fleece!I decided to give it a try anyway and took it to work last night. We received a large early winter storm that brought 20-55 mph wind and 3 inches of snow and temperatures that were around 0 with the wind chill. Needless to say the hat failed miserably as I expected. It does not stop wind as was it's marketing ploy and it certainly did not keep any part of my head that was covered any warmer than the parts that weren't. Would not recommend to anyone looking for a "warm, wind stopping" hat. It might be a good hat for "cool" days or very active people who are jogging in cool temperatures. Would not use as a ski hat either unless it was a mild day.
