Got this hat just in time for a major downpour, so can affirm that it's completely impermeable. What's more the fabric is flexible, so I ordered a second hat for another member of the family. The hat is generously sized; might be too big for some. Also the picture suggests the wrong orientation for the hat. For this, as for all other Sou'Wester hats, the long part extends to the back to cover the neck and prevent water from leaking in under your clothes. Even paying quite a bit for shipping, however, the price is lower than comparable gear, and it's pleasant not to have to wear yellow. Yellow might be safer, but one doesn't always want to stand out quite so much.

This hat arrived shortly before Sandy hit me in NYC. I wound up wearing it while my friend shot me and posted to Facebook. Many of the comments on the video (which features impressive footage of hurricane wind and rain) expressed appreciation of the hat.

The hat offers better face coverage than a raincoat's hood, is hands-free, and is not influenced by wind as umbrellas are. The only trouble I have is tying it properly. I tend to either make the knot too flimsy and end up having to re-tie it, or I'll end up getting it tangled and spend a long time just trying to get it off. I'm sure there is a way around this but I haven't had that many chances to use it.

The quality of the hat is also commendable. I'm sure it will outlast most of my wardrobe.
