So, from the picture this does look like a thick black hat. Which is exactly what I was looking for. It is, the threads/fibers are very thick. However the weave is such that it looks like my grandmothers knitting. The wind goes right through and on your head-which my having a shaved head, means it is cold.

Al my hats and caps are Goorin. They make well-crafted hats. They are my go-to company for headgear. I needed a warm hat like this to keep my bald head warm. I have an XL-sized head by Goorin standards. This cap just fits but is not too tight. I would prefer to have it a little larger but it is OK. The fabric is soft and not itchy. My head does not itch as with cheaper "wool" non-wool beanies. It looks great-definitely stylish and not something from Wal-Mart.. BUT as another reviewer stated, the open weave fabric seems to let cold wind INTO the hat. He said it seems like his head is colder with the hat on! I agree. When there is a cold wind the holes in the fabric act as velocity tunnels and channel the cold air around the bald head. IF there is no strong wind the hat is excellent. The open weave keeps my head and hair from getting sweaty because the hat breathes. This is great for strolling around town and looking cool. Love the quality but I will seek another design for really cold windy weather.

This beanie will "sit tight", as a beanie supposed to. And it's not a fur hat, so don't expect it to worm you much when it's 20 F or lower. (scratch that, read PS part) However, where I live, temperature rarely drops below 25 F, so for me it's perfect. It matches perfect with my pea coat, and adds this element of style to it. Exactly what I've wanted. Very satisfied with my purchase.

P.S. A few days after I've wrote this review, the temperature actually dropped to 5 F (-15 C), what can I say... I couldn't feel my nose and cheeks after walking my dog. But have no complains about this beanie. If something will happen to this one in the near future, I will order another one.
