Nothing beats wool for an underlayer, and these new Smartwool products are like nothing from previous generations. Lightweight, wicking, maintains warmth, fits any head snugly without being tight. Gave this to all three "boys" in my family, who spend time out in the cold. Intended for under ski and bike helmets, but they've been wearing it under caps and hats as well.

I run "warm" so, I often worry about getting to hot with something on my head. However, you need to keep your head and ears warm.. This is the best thing I've found. You hardly notice it under a helmet, and it covers your ears. Not too hot, not too cold.

This smartwool headliner fits transparently under your bike helmet. Keeps your head nice and toasty. Don't even know I'm wearing it half of the time. Comfortable. Really like the ear flaps that keep your ears warm. Even is cut longer in the back so that the top of the back of your neck also stays warm.

Bought my first one on a trip out to MOAB Utah in 2009 or 2010 (can't remember exactly). It was a very cold day in November, and there was still 3 days of riding ahead. Stopped at a local bike shop in the morning and picked this SmartWool headliner up. It fits perfectly under helmet, takes almost no room at all, and best of all, it cuts the wind and keeps my head and ears warm and out of the cold.

I also have a pair of 180-S earmuffs when it's REALLY cold (under 32F). I have used BOTH the headliner and muffs together, what a great combo. Both are so lightweight, if it gets warm just throw them in the pack and keep riding.
