The Kavu Fisherman's Chillba hat has potential but ultimately falls short. First the positives: The design of the hat is unique, straddling the delicate line between cool & geeky. It's much like a traditional fisherman's bucket hat, but the transition from the top of the hat to the brim is just a gentle curve, leaving no distinct separation between the top & bottom portions of the hat. It's an interesting look, and I kind of liked it. Second, the hat is wonderfully portable. It stores completely flat with no problem & no loss of shape, or it can be compressed down into a small form factor via it's flexible wire brim. It would travel equally well in a suitcase or in a backpack or tackle box. Finally, the hat is not advertised as such but I found it to be reversible. I picked up an olive colored hat & simply turned it inside out & cut off the tags and voila I now had the option of a black hat too. The chin strap is only functional right side out, but even when reversed it's no problem to tighten the strap and have it rest on the top of the brim. Pretty cool!

Now for the negative, and there is only one but it is a deal breaker for me: the hat is simply not breathable. I wore it for the first time doing some landscaping in my yard on a hot day, and when I broke a heavy sweat digging up some shrub roots, the hat got unpleasantly wet. It is made of a lightweight nylon but it just doesn't breathe. I kept having to take it off to shake some of the perspiration out and found it to be unpleasant to wear due to the moisture and lack of fresh airflow on my noggin.

Too bad the Kavu Fisherman's Chillba doesn't breathe, otherwise it would be a great hat for sun protection. I suppose if you plan to use it in an environment with mild temperatures it could serve you well. But for those like me who foresee most of its use coming in hot weather, I'd pass on it. If you're looking for a better hot weather option, I'm a fan of the Columbia Sportswear Men's Bora Bora Booney. Similar kind of hat but with some mesh that allows it to breathe. It lacks the more resilient kind of wire brim but ultimately wins out by giving your head some breathing space.

This is a great hat and I don't know why they say it's "men's" because I think it's totally unisex (especially their new spring colors and patterns). It collapses into a 3" flat circle and is really light weight, but strap it down when it's windy and it stays on without choking you. I basically love it except that the chin strap is NOT BLACK, but bright ORANGE bummer. The old version I lost years ago was black like the picture and maybe it's just the navy blue that has the lame orange strap, but so it is though I wish they would make that clear in the description if not update the picture (false advertising).

I love this hat/ I purchased mine a few years back in a local store... mine is black on both inside and outside and also has a black strap. I ordered the blue one for a friend as a gift. The blue is also reversible. She loves the hat also, despite the newer model having a bright orange chin strap (as opposed to just black). What I like about this hat,

1. It folds up and fits in my coat pocket or even a jeans back pocket when not using which makes it great on the go or when I am walking the dog on a day when it could rain.

2. The chin strap. Orange color notwithstanding, any rain hat I buy MUST have a chin strap because what good is the hat if it blows off while it is raining? I also do activites where I may be moving at a decent pace in the rain... so staying on is key.

3. When the hat pops open it still looks the same. In other words, some hats with more structure wind up all bent out of shape if you try to fold them up to pack them or put them in a pocket, etc.

4. The water runs off the back, not down my neck. I had one hat that I purchased and returned because the water would run off the brim in the back and wind up running down between my collar and my neck... useless. This hat does not have that problem.

It is not a fitted hat and it dow not have an adjustable band that tightens it around your head. The chin strap is what keeps it on in blowing wind. Some may not like that... but a rain hat for me is not a fashion statement anyway, its about function.

Love the hat, it's light weight and works for what I need it for. I would recommend it for hiking, gardening, fishing. I also like the fact that it is packable and can be stored in a small pocket.

Although I do like this hat and think it's attractive and fits well, there were a couple surprising things about the design that weren't covered in the description online. First, the brim extends farther than it looks like in the pictures so the hat doesn't have as small of a bucket-type profile as I expected. And second, a stiff wire for shape is inserted within the edge of the brim that is actually sort of thick and rectangular in shape. It's flexible enough but doesn't hold whatever shape I try to bend it in so the brim remains sort of "flat/open" as depicted in the picture. Which is attractive except it extends much farther than I wanted for a bucket hat.
