My husband wanted this hat for himself but after one wash, it shrunk and now is my son's hat. The fabric is nice and the fact that it is foldable for travel is good, but disappointed that it is not made from pre-shrunk fabric because cold water can't get stuff as clean as warm water.

I wear these "Bushmaster" type hats year round for sun protection and I LOVE them. I wear them in and out of the water. I do find they're great for sun protection which is the whole reason I wear them. I knock off 1 star only 4 lack of sizing as they previously did provide options 4...

A few pointers:

THEY RUN LARGE (as others have mentioned, SO TAKE HEED before u BUY!)

This can b good or bad... I noticed Quicksilver started a few years ago making them in what they call ONE SIZE FITS ALL, which is sooo not at all true. I have an average-sized head that always fit well in their other hats and similar hats by Roxy, Billabong etc. I was really angry when I bought one here on Amazon and realized how big it was...until I realized it was perfect 2 wear when I have a hair clip or ponytail on, both which u can not traditionally wear a hat and still have in. Another plus, more sun protection especially 4 the often NOT thought of ears!

THE MATERIAL

The canvas is of the thinner variety, not what u'd find when u got these hats between 1990-2000 era. But it does the trick. The hat will hold on even when waves crash over u as long as u have the string secured under your chin properly. But do KEEP IN MIND IT DOES SHRINK. So this can solve some of the WAY-TOO-BIG-4-many-of-our-heads problem. If u do not want it 2 shrink or need 2 re-stretch it out: when wet, keep it on your head (I know uncomfortable but at the beach, it works...) or use a prop 2 keep it inside of the hat while it dries. I have washed my hat & then used a scrap piece of wood 2 jimmy in there as it dried...it worked 2 stretch it back out 2 my head size.

Amazon's pricing on the hat of $20 and just slightly above is reasonable & worth every penny.

I had read reviews of this hat that said it was *very* large for a one-size-fits-all hat. I got it in part of my quest to keep the sun off my head when I'm outside during the summer. I've got thick hair and a large head--26" with my hair down--and this hat was just a bit too small. I could wear it, but it was a tight squeeze. Anyone with less hair or a somewhat smaller head would probably do fine. I wouldn't get it for someone with a small head, though, because it would be way too large. If you want something with room for a cooling pack or thick hair, this would be a good bet.
