Wow!
This hat is -stunninglylight. I've worn English Ivys that range from heavy leather to thin cotton, and this, by far, is the lightest and airiest.
I was a bit concerned from the picture about the center section being fragile, or having hair poke out through the mesh (which would look very unprofessional.) Neither turned out to be the case. The weave is 100% polyester and has the perfect blend of stretch to toughness. The entire cap is very loosely knit, contributing to the whole "am I still wearing my hat?" feeling of breezy ventilation. Yet, at the same time, it somehow avoids looking like a pincushion for hair sprigs through what I can only assume is black magic.
On the flip side, being polyester, it is a bit rougher than the average cotton cap. For those sporting a chrome-dome this roughness may be noticeable, particularly around the edges of the center panel. You may also want to consider the possibility of a very odd sunburn patterning your head, should you find yourself lacking a bit in the hair department during a real scorcher.
As for the fit, there is a nice crease towards the back of the cap that makes for a distinct "rear" section -something I appreciate more often than not. Another contribution to the fit is a supple and amply wide full-circumference elastic headband. The band flattens out nicely towards the brim, making for a comfortable, snug, but not overly-tight fit on the 23" walkabout of my cranium. For those with a generous coiffure you should find the cap more than deep enough to tame it, though by the same token you may find the sides of the ivy ride a bit close to your ears if you prefer a more close-cropped cut.
My only real points of contention are in reference to the shape, but that comes down to a matter of personal preference and the structure of your own noggin, rather than a flaw in the hat's design or execution. This cap, like other MG Ivys, has a very wide, squared, flat bill. My head is bit narrow to really pull off the look perfectly. In addition, because the fabric is so light and the hat so deep, the cap doesn't hold its shape very consistently. When on my head there are two "divits" on the top of the ivy where the brim is no longer holding the shape and the top of the cap has not yet met my head. On the sides there is a fair amount of wrinkling, since my head doen't fill in the ivy quite as completely as the optimum owner's would. Again, these things depend highly on the shape of your brain bucket. I would say this cap would look best on an individual with a rounder, broader face. However, if you have a narrower complexion, don't let that stop you! The aesthetic issues with the fit are minor, and only pointed out here for the extreme sticklers.
This is certainly a cap to keep on the rack for those blisteringly hot days, or if you are looking for an ivy that doesn't sit heavy on the brow. It's a fine feather-weight you don't want to miss out on.Excellent fit,,great material !!!! 2 thumbs up ! recommended ,sweet price !!!! Adjust nicely to the head's contour !!!! great deal!
