I do have a small head, so let's get that out of the way. You might think you could market beanies in two sizes at least, but alas. This bears mention because while the hat does not feel loose on my head, exactly, it does have its baggy moments leading to a fit that kind of blobs out if I don't really force it to soak up as much of my head as possible. Even then, something about the fit of this (and admittedly many beanies) just doesn't feel like it conforms neatly, the fit just leaves a bit to be desired.
There is, again on my tiny head, a lot of hat to go around, however, resulting in quite good coverage. It'll cover up my ears without issue and most of the back of my head. Maybe all of it, depending on where you think head stops and neck begins. Either way a lot gets protected.
The material is fairly thin, and not the warmest. This does have the advantage of making it very compact; the 'pocket' designation is apt indeed. Fold it twice and there's still very little to bulge out in a pocket. But know that it is at the cost of warmth. Not to say that the hat does nothing, because it does keep a head warm. But, other hats keep heads warmer.
The merino is very soft, and while I bought it for the sake of having a black hat, the reversible nature is nice (and well executed). In case anyone is curious, the 'cargo' part of the black/cargo color is an olive drab sort of a color, but prettier. Perhaps it's just the texture of the fabric, but it's a very pleasing alternative to the black.
Four stars for what it is, but as was mentioned in a previous review, there are warmer options if you're really going to be fighting the cold.

I found that the Seirus dome hat kept my head warmer; the built in ear protection is phenomenal.
Recommend the Icebreaker hat for situations where you're looking for a low-to-medium level of head protection. It'll do fine. However, if it's cold and you're looking to keep your ears from freezing, then go with the Seirus hat instead.
